The Man Ezeke Sunshine Show: BBC Sessions

The Man Ezeke Sunshine Show: BBC Sessions is a mix-tape of recordings broadcast on BBC Radio One between 1990 and 1993 in the U.K.

The Man Ezeke was born Ezekiel Grey in the Montego Bay region of Jamaica and started his recording career as a performing artist and musician in the early 1960's with the Aqua Vita Band.
He went on to release a number of singles under the name Man Ezeke as well as in his own name including "Rasta Man A Come", "Love Jamaica" and "Enoch The Nook". He also released an album of childrens songs and stories.

His style being varied from Reggae, Roots, Soca and Calypso, this eclectic taste of Carribean music styles would be showcased in his broadcasts as a radio disc jockey.
His first notable job in this area was on BBC Radio Bedfordshire in England, where he would play music for the Afro Carribean community.

In 1990 he began the Man Ezeke Sunshine Show on major U.K station BBC Radio One which was broadcast on weekday evenings and later Sunday afternoons.
It was a very popular show and helped in promoting Reggae, Soca and Calypso music in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland throughout the early Nineties.

The Man Ezeke would play a wide range of Carribean music covering every sub-genre within Reggae music, including Dub, Rocksteady, Rockers and Dancehall both old and new.
Ezekiel went on to host other shows on BBC Radio One including the Number One's at One show, making him the first ever black day time presenter on the station.

In the mid-nineties however the station underwent a major overhaul of it's programming and Ezekiel left the BBC to the disappointment of many listening fans.

In recent times The Man Ezeke has hosted a Saturday night request show on Ireland's Cork FM, made public appearances as a DJ and an event host.
He has a home in the Jamaican hills of Freedom, St, Catherine and you can view videos of his adventures there on youtube.

This mix-tape is a selection of moments from his BBC Radio One Sunshine Show, including Jingles, Stories, letter reading and some fantastic tunes spun by the man himself.
A particularly funny moment included is when he starts up a vinyl of Burning Spear not realizing that he has the RPM setting wrong (always makes me laugh) and of course his fantastic between songs banter.

If anyone out there has any more Man Ezeke radio broadcasts that they could send in the please do, I would love to get hold of some more archive recordings.  pipecockjackxonrrm@gmail.com

Update 2023

The Man Ezeke Collection has been greatly expanded with huge thanks to our friend Alan who provided us with an absolute treasure trove of cassette tapes that he had recorded direct from the original BBC broadcasts back in the day, capturing some incredible episodes and wonderful music.

    1. Yeah DBC was an awesome pirate broadcast, there was a compilation put out a couple of years back (I think it was on Trojan) that celebrated the station.
I wonder if those shows you have are available anywhere else? If not it would be great if we could make them available here? :-)
